Team Predictions

Individual Predictions

  W-L

1 Fonda-Fultonville 8-0 1 Jeremy McAllister Fonda-Fultonville
2 Duanesburg 7-1 2 Joe Geniti Fonda-Fultonville
3 Berne-Knox-Westerlo 6-2 3 Jonathan Csontos Duanesburg
4 Mayfield 5-3 4 Jared Finke Berne-Knox
5 Galway 4-4 5 Josh Norman Mayfield
6 Schenectady Christian 3-5 6 Kyle Lynch Duanesburg
7 Middleburgh 2-6 7 Blake Dwyer Fonda-Fultonville
8 Schoharie 1-7 8 Robert Tangen Mayfield
9 Canajoharie/Fort Plain 0-8 9 Wes Coppolo Duanesburg
      10 Tyler Messick Berne-Knox

Looks to be a two team race between Fonda-Fultonville and Duanesburg. With the top two returning runners in the league. I give the edge to Fonda-Fultonville, in fact I have the score 27-28 so it's really a toss up. Berne-Knox and Mayfield should battle it out for third with Berne-Knox getting the slight edge. Individually, Fonda-Fultonville's Jeremy McAllister is the returning champion and is the big favorite to repeat. Team mate Joe Geniti and Duanesburg's Jonathan Csontos could be the spoilers.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs

Last year's record: 3-1 Sectional place: 2nd place - Class C

Top Returnees: Jared Finke-Jr., Josh Glick, Tyler Mesick-Sr., Tom DellaRocco-Fr., Dave Haverly So., Aaron Giebitz-Jr., Tyler Merrill-Jr.

Outlook: Big loss with Travis DeRusso graduating but they return everyone else plus they add Glick who was injured last year. Finke was in the mid 17's last year and should be top five in the league. Mesick was in the mid 18's with the rest of the varsity in the 19 minute range. If they can get a solid season from Glick and their fourth and fifth runners drop down to the low 18's then they have a good chance of threatening Fonda-Fultonville and Duanesburg.

Duanesburg Eagles

Last year's record: 4-0 Sectional place: 2nd place - Class D

Top Returnees: Jon Csontos-Jr.., Kyle Lynch-Jr., Wes Coppolo-Jr., Greg Cashdollar-Sr., Brad Savoy-Jr., Drew Lomax-Sr., Phillip Dexter-Jr.

Outlook: Lost their two out of their top seven to graduation but brings back a solid nucleus with state qualifier Csontos leading the way. Their second through fifth runners all ran in the low to mid 18 minute range last year and they can be a very tough team if they can improve on that. They're depth may be a problem as their sixth and seventh runners we over 20 minutes so they'll need to improve on that.

Fonda-Fultonville Braves

Last year's record: 4-0 Sectional place: 1st place - Class C - Class C State Champions

Top Returnees: Jeremy McAllister-Sr., Joe Geniti-Sr., Blake Dwyer-Sr., Brisan Palumbo-Sr., Alex Schnackenberg-Sr., Charles Weaver-Sr., A.J. Broderick-Jr.

Outlook: Defending Class C state champions to a big hit losing three out of their top five to graduation. Still has a solid team with Section 2 Class C champ McAllister leading the way and Geniti also going under 17 minutes last year. Rest of the team will look to improve as Dwyer and Palumbo were in the 18 minute range and the rest of the team in the 19's. Still have a good shot to repeat but need their third through fifth runners to improve.

Fort Plain/Canajoharie

Last year's record: 0-4 Sectional place: incomplete - Class D

Top Returnees: Patrick Petty-Sr., Kyle Smith-Jr., Jonathan Hill-Jr., Carleton Thayer-Jr.

Outlook:  Combining the two teams gives both school a chance of fielding a complete team this year as four return. Petty and Hill were in the 19 minute range but they will need to work on their depth as their third and fourth runners were both over 20 minutes last year.

Galway Golden Eagles

Last year's record: 2-2 Sectional place: 7th place - Class D (Class C this year)

Top Returnees: Charles Morgan-Sr., Max Morgan-So., Christopher Ferguson-Fr.., Johnny Griffin-Fr., Lucas Alford-Fr., Max Morgan-So., Matt Weaver-Jr.

Outlook: Lose their top runner and fifth runner to graduation. The Morgan's and Ferguson were in the 19 minute range last year then a dropoff to 22 minutes for their fourth and fifth runners. Will get some help from a very good modified team from last year so will it depend on how those runners develop through the season.

Mayfield

Last year's record: 3-1 Sectional place: 6th place - Class C

Top Returnees: Josh Norman-So., Robert Tangen-Sr., Adam Hawley-Sr., Thomas Dugan-Sr., Mike Rodriguez, Bob Perham

Outlook: Loss of last year's top runner, Alex Brooks is a big loss but they still return a solid team. Norman and Tangen were both in the 18 minute range with Hawley and Dugan is the low 19's. Need a fifth runner which they may have with some new runners they have this year. Also could use some depth as one injury could really hurt the team. Could be a tough team by the end of the year if a number five runner develops.

Middleburgh Knights

Last year's record: 1-3 Sectional place: 8th place - Class D

Top Returnees: Gabe Medina-Sr., Joe Marotta-So., Lance Hueston-Sr., Cody Sellick-Jr., Ben Houck-Jr., Austin Terrell-Jr.

Outlook: Team only in it's second year so they're making steps in the right direction. Only lose one out of their top seven so there should be an improvement this year. Medina is their only runner who was under 20 minutes last year but should be better this year.

Schenectady Christian

Last year's record: 1-3 Sectional place: 10th place - Class C

Top Returnees: Mike Klien-Sr., Jeff Moore-Sr., Kyle Galarneau-So., Ian Compton-So., Eric Compton-Sr., Tim Humphrey-Jr., Nathan Hale-So., Caleb Garafalo-Jr.

Outlook: Loss of state qualifier Nate Turner to graduation is a big loss. Moore is the only returning runner that has gone under 20 minutes but they also bring in some new runners from the track to to help their depth. They will need the new runners to step in to help and also see a drop in times from their returning runners if they want to move up in the league.

Schoharie Indians

Last year's record: 0-4 Sectional place: 9th place - Class D

Top Returnees: Evan Motschmann-Sr., Corbett Prince-Sr., Andy Schultz-So.,Vinny Pricolo-Jr.

Outlook: Lose their number two runner and only return four but should have a full with runners coming up from modified. Motschmann is their only runner to go under 19 minutes with the rest of the runner over 22 minutes. Will need to see big improvements from everyone if they want to move up in the league.

 Western Athletic Conference Girls

Last Year's Team Champion: Duanesburg

Last Year's Individual Champion: Kimberly Negrich (Mayfield)

Team Predictions

Individual Predictions

  W-L

1. Duanesburg 8-0 1 Kimberly Negrich Mayfield
2 Fonda-Fultonville 7-1 2 Ada Lauterbach Berne-Knox-Westerlo
3 Mayfield 6-2 3 Ashley Jackman Duanesburg
4 Berne-Knox-Westerlo 5-3 4 Natasha DeGuile Duanesburg
5 Schoharie 4-4 5 Laura McGarry Duanesburg
6 Galway 3-5 6 Courtney Eggleston Fonda-Fultonville
7 Canajoharie/Fort Plain 0-6-2 7 Michela Hornbeck Fonda-Fultonville
7 Middleburgh 0-6-2 8 Ashleigh Scott Fonda-Fultonville
7 Schenectady Christian 0-6-2 9 Joan Kanarkiewicz Duanesburg
      10 Danielle Tomeck Duanesburg

Duanesburg is the big favorite to repeat as they have five in the league's top ten and has more depth than any team in the league. Fonda-Fultonville looks to be the only team that can unseat them but Duanesburg has three ahead of their first runner as far. Mayfield looks to be a solid third and may challenge Fonda-Fultonville if they can improve their depth and Berne-Knox-Westerlo is right behind Mayfield for fourth place. Individually, Mayfield's Kim Negrich is the defending champion and is the slight favorite to repeat. Ada Lauterbach has the top returning time though and will be looking to unseat them. Pick any one of the top three Duanesburg runners as a possible dark horse.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs

Last year's record: 2-2 Sectional place: 5th place - Class C

Top Returnees: Ada Lauterbach-Jr., Katrina Yakel-Jr., Michelle Raymond-Sr., Christina Bartonicek-So., Claire Della Rocco-Sr., Justine Crevatas-So., Alyssa Wetterau-So.

Outlook: Lost two out of their top five which is going to hurt their depth this year.  Lauterbach is the returning Section 2 Class C champion and is one of the favorites in the league. Yakel and Raymond were both in the 22 minute range but they will need some improvements from their fourth and fifth runners if they want to move up in the league and Class C.

Duanesburg Eagles

Last year's record: 4-0 Sectional place: 2nd Place - Class D

Top Returnees: Ashley Jackman-Jr., Natasha DeGuile-Jr., Lauren McGarry-So., Joan Kanarkiewicz-Jr., Melissa Kuhl-So., Amber Cioffi-Sr., Danielle Tomeck-Jr.

Outlook: Defending league champions return everyone and are big favorites to repeat. Jackman and DeGuile were both in the 20 minute range with the rest of the top seven all running in the 21's. With five out of the top ten times in the league and with the best depth, they should have no problems repeating. Will also be a favorite for the Class D title this year.

Fonda-Fultonville Braves

Last year's record: 4-0 Sectional place: 3rd place - Class C

Top Returnees: Courtney Eggleston-Sr., Michela Hornbeck-Sr., Ashleigh Scott-Sr., Elizabeth Cashin-So., Shelia Niedziela-So., Samantha Givis-So.

Outlook: Filled their lineup really well last year and returns the whole team back. Great top four with all of them in the 21 minutes range. They will need some more depth and some improvement from the number five runner if they want to challenge Duanesburg. If they can find someone to step into that position then they could step in for the league title.

Fort Plain/Canajoharie

Last year's record: 0-4 Sectional place: incomplete - Class D

Top Returnees: Kelsey Stockwell-Sr., Emily Smith-Sr., Aurora Culwell-So.

Outlook:  The combining of the two schools could give them a chance to field a complete team. Since Canajoharie had a full modified last year it will probably depend on how many of them come out this year. Stockwell was just over 22 minutes last year and is a good number one runner. Rest of the team will need to improve though.

Galway Golden Eagles

Last year's record: 2-2 Sectional place: 4th place - Class D (Class C this year)

Top Returnees: Molly Sittner-Fr., Emily Page-Jr., Andrea Nicols-Jr., Tessa White-Sr.

Outlook:  No other team was hit as hard by graduation as Galway was. Six out of their top seven graduated leaving Page as the only returning runner. Only have four so far but should field a full team. Sittner was the league modified champion and is a solid addition. It will all depend on how the new runners to the team do.

Mayfield

Last year's record: 3-1 Sectional place: 4th Place - Class C

Top Returnees: Kim Negrich-Sr., Sierra Derby-Jr., Taryn Cooper-Sr., Kathleen Dugan-So., Cassandra VanNorstrand-Fr.

Outlook: Lose their fifth and sixth runners from last year. Negrich is the defending league champion and will once again be a favorite to win. Derby and Cooper were both in the 21 minute range and are a solid two-three and with Dugan in the 22's they have a very good top four. They are going to have to rely on VanNorstand, who's up from modified for the number five runner. Not sure if they can move up into the top two in the league but they still have the ability to be a very strong team this year.

Middleburgh Knights

Last year's record: 0-4 Sectional place: incomplete - Class D

Top Returnees: Amy VanVoorhis-Sr., Jocelyn Pleasant-Jr.

Outlook: Return the two runners they had from their inaugural season bit both were over 31 minutes. Team will have to keep improving to build up a team

Schenectady Christian

Last year's record: 0-4 Sectional place: incomplete - Class D

Top Returnees: Elizabeth Curwick-So.

Outlook:  Only had three runners last year and lost their top two. They're two big losses and Katie Kaidas and Molly Frazer were both state qualifiers last year. Curwick is their only runner so far so they will need to build around her.

Schoharie Indians

Last year's record: 3-1 Sectional place: 5th place - Class D

Top Returnees: Sarah Borthwick-Jr., Rachel Karker-Sr., Lauren Isles-Sr., Jamie Hogan-So., Eileen Quandt-So., Caitlin Kavanaugh-So.

Outlook: Lost three out of their top five from last year. Borthwick was in the mid 21 minutes last year and is a good number one. Karker was in the 23 minute range but the rest of the team were all over 26 minutes. Will need to see a significant drop in times if they want to move up in the league and sectional.
