Section 2 Harrier Website Foothills Council 2006 Preview Foothills Council Boys Last Year's Team Champion: Queensbury Last Year's Individual Champion: Steve Soprano (Queensbury)
Queensbury returns as the defending Class A State Champions and even though they lost some of their top runners they should once again take home the Foothills Council Championship. With a deep J.V. team from last year they return six out of the top ten returning times in the league. Scotia-Glenville lost one of their top runners but second place is probably the best they can do. South Glens Falls and Broadalbin-Perth should battle it out for third place. I give the early nod to South Glens Falls but Broadalbin-Perth is young and experienced and can definitely move past them. Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, and Gloversville will fight for the fifth spot. Individually, Queensbury's Matt Flint has the top returning time and added a great track season which makes some the early favorite. He'll be challenged by Scotia-Glenville's Ryan Madigan and Spartan team mate Kevin Mulcahy. The league top ten looks mostly like a Queensbury-Scotia dual meet. Broadalbin-Perth Patriots Last Year's Record: 5-3 (in Colonial Council) Sectional Place: 3rd place - Class B Projected Varsity: Andrew Goodspeed-So., R.J. Reakes-So., Chuck Bousa-Jr., Aaron Hawkins-So., Eric Klymkow-So. Outlook: After a year in the Colonial Council Broadalbin-Perth is back in the Foothills. Lose their top runner, John Wilcox, to graduation but other five on the team all return. A very young team with four sophomores and a junior with Goodspeed and Reakes both in the 18;s and Bousa and Hawkins in the 19's. Need to improve on depth to move up but probably won't break up the top two teams. Glens Falls Indians Last Year's Record: 3-2 Sectional Place: 8th place - Class A Projected Varsity: Matt St. Cyr-Jr., Josh Caprood-Sr., John Bellinger-Fr., Ryan Woods-Sr., Dan Johnston-Sr. Outlook: Losing their first and third runners is going to hurt this year. St. Cyr and Caprood were both in the 18 minutes range last year with the rest of the top five hovering around the 20-21 minute range. Will need the third through fifth to improve and add some depth though it will still be tough for them to move up, maybe a spot. Gloversville Huskies Last Year's Record: 0-5 Sectional Place: 10th place - Class A Projected Varsity: Ryan Blackmon-Jr., Austin Hunold-Jr., Bruce Barclay-Jr., Shawn Wells-Jr., James Bielle-So. Outlook: Young team of five all return this year. Blackmon is their only runner under 19 minutes last year but Hunold had a pretty good track season. Will need some help in depth to bolster their fifth runner and some improvement from their third and fourth runners. Team definitely has a chance to move up from preseason predictions. Hudson Falls Tigers Last Year's Record: 2-3 Sectional Place: 6th place - Class B Projected Varsity: Jacob Schuler-Jr., Brian Kelly-Jr., Eric Shuler-Jr., D.J. Groff-Jr., Craig Cook-Sr., Lucas McCarthy-Jr., Shawn Werich-So. Outlook: Lost their first and third runners tp graduation which will hurt them this year. Kelly was in the mid 18's last year and the Schuler's were both in the high 19's with the rest of the team in the 20-21 minute range. Will definitely need improvements from everyone, Kelly needs to be under 18 with at least a couple more runners under 19 minutes if they want to move up. Queensbury Spartans Last Year's Record: 5-0 Sectional Place: 1st place - Class A - Class A State Champions Projected Varsity: Matt Flint-Jr., Kevin Mulcahy-Sr., Joel Loke-Sr., Sean Gallagher-Sr., Sean Barber-Jr., Chris Taylor-So., Brian Gallagher-So. Outlook: Lost four out of seven from last year's state championships team, most team would be reeling but the Spartans are so deep that they just reload for another run at sectionals. Make no mistake about it, losing Steve Soprano and Jeremy Beaudette is going to sting but Flint is one of the top runners in the league and section and with Mulcahy and Loke under 17 last year and a bunch of runners that were in the 17 minute range last year they should once again take the league title and have their annual battle with Burnt Hills for the Class A title. Scotia-Glenville Tartans Last Year's Record: 4-1 Sectional Place: 3rd place - Class A Projected Varsity: Ryan Madigan-Jr., Anthony Gatta-Sr., Pete Rowell-Sr., John Maggs-Sr., Nick Gatta-Jr., Ed Griffith-Sr, Matt Roberts-So. Outlook: Return a tough team but loss of 4-time state qualifier Brandon Madigan will definitely hurt. Also the loss of Tim White will hurt all of Section 2 for comedy sake. Ryan Madigan is a returning state qualifier and should be one of the top runners in the league and Class A. The rest of their top five were all under 18 minutes but will need to improve to make any move on Queensbury. South Glens Falls Bulldogs Last Year's Record: 1-4 Sectional Place: 9th place - Class A Projected Varsity: Jon Hotmer-Sr., Nick June-Jr., Michael O'Rourke-Jr., Kevin Gecha-Sr., Tony Merrill-Jr. Outlook: Return their top five but they're the only five they have. Hotmer is a top ten runner in the league wading in a sea of Queensbury and Scotia-Glenville runners. Team will need improvements from their second through fourth runners and some depth to help out their fifth runner but I don't really see them moving up and challenging for top two in the league.
Foothills Council Girls Last Year's Team Champion: Queensbury Last Year's Individual Champion: Caroline King (Scotia-Glenville)
Queensbury is the defending league champion and should repeat as they bring back their top six runners. Broadalbin-Perth returns from the Colonial Council with a tough top four and should hold off the one-two punch of Scotia-Glenville to take second in the league. South Glens Falls and Glens Falls will battle for fourth but with some improvements both teams could crack the top three. Individually there are some very tough runners. Hudson Falls' Gina Cristaldi is projected ninth and she's the defending Class B champion. The top three should be between the King sister, Jillian and Caroline, and Queensbury's Cara Sprague. The top two from Glens Falls, Samantha Hickok and Erin Kuhn could jump in the top three if one of them falters. Broadalbin-Perth Patriots Last Year's Record: 7-1 (in Colonial Council) Sectional Place: 1st place - Class B Projected Varsity: Alex Kuhl-Jr., Elizabeth Ferlazzo-So., Lianna Ferguson-So., Nicole Wojohowski-So., Allissa LaPort-Sr., Cassie Rigo-Fr., Kayla Bellinger-Sr. Outlook: Defending Class B champions return a tough, young top four and are the favorite to repeat as Class B champs. Their top four were all right around the 20 minute barrier last year and return with another year under their belt. Their Achilles heel has been their fifth runner and Rigo coming up from modified may be the runner to fill that position. I don't see them taking out Queensbury but should hang on to second in the league after spending last year in the Colonial Council. Glens Falls Indians Last Year's Record: 4-1 Sectional Place: 5th place - Class A Projected Varsity: Samantha Hickok-Sr., Erin Kuhn-Jr., Madeline De De Pankin-Jr., Ciera Fyliepek-Jr., Megan Hammond-Sr., Emily Behan-Jr. Outlook: Return a tough one-two punch with Hickok and Kuhn. Both were state qualifiers last year. The third through fifth runners is where they need the help. De De Pankin was just over 22 minutes last year but the rest of the team was way over 23 minutes and will need bid improvements if they want to challenge for second or third in the league and if they want to move up from fifth in Class A. Gloversville Huskies Last Year's Record: 0-5 Sectional Place: Incomplete - Class A Projected Varsity: Amber Weidemann-So., Christine Plumadore-So. Outlook: Were incomplete last year and to make matters worse, lost their number one runner to graduation. Team will need to work on filling up their lineup. Even if they do I don't see them moving up in the league this season. Hudson Falls Tigers Last Year's Record: 1-4 Sectional Place: 7th place - Class B Projected Varsity: Gina Cristaldi-So., Erin Tripp-Sr., Caitlin Gregory-So., Brittany Rich-Sr., Brooke Stranahan-Fr., Ashley Bounviaggio-Fr., Bianca Fritze-Fr., Tiffany Hathaway-Sr. Outlook: Only had five runners last year but return all of them. Cristaldi is the defending Class B champion and a solid number one runner. Tripp is just over 22 minutes but will need improvements from their thris through fifth runners who all ran between 23 to 28 minutes last year. If they can get some more help they an possibly move up in the league Queensbury Spartans Last Year's Record: 5-0 Sectional Place: 3rd place - Class A Projected Varsity: Cara Sprague-Sr., Emily Smith-Sr., Jackie Brambley-Sr., Morgan Mueller-So., Shannon Mulshine-Jr., Brittany Harrison-Jr., Jessica Colbey-Sr. Outlook: Defending league champ return their top six runners from last year. They had a tough 3 way race with Holy Names and Burnt Hills in Class A and finished third and will be looking for redemption this year. Sprague is one of the top runners in the league and they have three others that were in the 19 minute range last year. With their depth and a probable runner or two up from last year's modified they should once again challenge for the Class A title. Scotia-Glenville Tartans Last Year's Record: 2-3 Sectional Place: 8th place - Class A Projected Varsity: Caroline King-Sr., Jillian King-Jr., Amanda Schermerhorn-Jr., Kelly DeAprix-Jr., Kayla Jackson-Sr., Val Bethka-Sr., Emily Mize-Jr. Outlook: After a rough year Jillian King returns to the team with the rest of their top five and should see a big improvemnt. The King sisters are the top one-two in the league but their third through fifth were all in the 22 minute range and will need to srop those times if they want to move up in the league. Will definitely improve from last year's disappointing Class A performance. South Glens Falls Bulldogs Last Year's Record: 3-2 Sectional Place: 7th place - Class A Projected Varsity: Keri McEntee-Sr., Erin McCullough-Jr., Nicole Horvath-Sr., Janet Evarts-Sr., Faryl Hewlett-So., Taylor Carota-So., Ellen Mattison-Sr. Outlook: Graduation hit them hard a year ago but only lose one runner from their top six this year. McEntee and McCullough were both in the 20 minute range with Horvath and Evarts in the high 21's. Will need some improvements and a little more depth if they want to move up in the league. May have a tough times moving up in Class A though.
