Section 2 Harrier Website Colonial Council 2006 Preview Colonial Council Boys Last Year's Team Champion: Voorheesville Last Year's Individual Champion: Michael Thornton (Cohoes)
League Outlook Looks like another battle between Voorheesville and Cobleskill-Richmondville for the league title. Voorheesville looks to be a bigger favorite this year with four runners in the top eight for the league. Albany Academy, Lansingburgh and Schalmont will fight it out for third. I give Albany Academy the early edge because they look to have a better pack of runners then the other two but all three projected scores that I have are close. Individually, Michael Thornton of Cohoes is the two-time champion and should repeat but Zach Williams of Cobleskill-Richmondville and Voorheesville's Mackey Lloyd are talented enough to overtake him for the title.
Albany Academy Cadets Last year's record: 4-4 Sectional place: 7th place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Tom Dorwaldt-So., Sachin Gupta-Sr., Rajiv Raghavan-So., Dan Hogan-Jr., Paul Osterdahl-Sr., Kirby Daly-Jr., Sam Barrett-Sr. Outlook: Team returns their entire top seven from last year. Young team last year now has a year under their belt and should show a good improvement from last year. Barrett joins the team after a very good track season and should bolster the team. Rest the team last year only had about a 30 second gap but they will need to bring those times down if they want to improve in the league and Class B. Cobleskill-Richmondville Bulldogs Last year's record: 7-1 Sectional place: 2nd place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Zach Williams-Jr., Grant Ostrander-Jr., Shane Jones-Sr., Steve Chader-Sr., Austin Irish-Jr., Jeremy Ginsburg-Jr., Keegan Girffith-So. Outlook: Lost state qualifier Matt Langan-Peck plus two others from their top seven to graduation but with state qualifier Zach Williams returning and six other runner returning they should stay close to the top of the league and sectional standings this year. Williams (16:54) is one of only three league runners under 17 minutes at Queensbury last year and also have Ostrander in the mid 18's and Jones and Chader in the 19 minute range. What they need is more depth with their fifth runner and would like to see a drop in times from Jones and Chader. With those improvements they could challenge Voorheesville for the league title. Cohoes Tigers Last year's record: 0-8 Sectional place: incomplete - Class B Top Projected Runners: Mike Thornton-Sr. Outlook: Only had Mike Thornton last year but the 2-time league and Class B champion is a good way to start. Team needs to try and fill up the lineup to help out Thornton this year. Lansingburgh Knights Last year's record: 3-5 Sectional place: 8th Place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Justin Warner-Jr., Ian Leavitt-Sr., Nathan Safford-Jr., John Kewley-Sr., R.J. Howansky-Sr., John Rockert-So., Jeff Zoviskoski-Sr., Alney Tobias-Fr. Outlook: Lost their top runner from last year but Warner showed some good improvement and can definitely turn into a top ten runner in the league. They have good number returning but Leavitt is the only other returning runner to go under 20 minutes so the team will need a drop in times from their third through fifth runners if they want to move up in the league and sectional standings. Mechanicville Red Raiders Last year's record: 0-8 Sectional place: incomplete - Class C Top Projected Runners: Matt Clements-Sr. Outlook: The good news for Mechanicville is that they were able to save their fall sports. The bad news is that they lost their top runner from last year and only return Clements. Red Raiders will need to work on filling their lineup before concentrating on what they can do in the league. Ravena Indians Last year's record: 2-6 Sectional place: 9th place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Emmanuel Hernandez-Sr., Andrew Fuller-Jr., A.J. Clarke-So., Joe Liza-Jr., Dave Winnie-Jr. Outlook: Only lost their number two runner to graduation but Hernandez is their only runner to go under twenty minutes. Team is young with no seniors in the lineup and three sophomores. Rest of the team will need to improve on their times is they want to see a move up in the league standings. Schalmont Sabres Last year's record: 6-2 Sectional place: 5th place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Matt Curiano-Sr., Mike Notar-Sr., Dan Tompkins-Jr., Dan McCrossen-So., Justin Fish-Sr., Brian Waddell-Sr., Nick Hanson-Jr. Outlook: Hit hard by graduation with the loss of their second through fourth runners from last year. Curiano enters the season as a top five league runner and since he just missed missing states last year should be highly motivated. Mike Notar is the only other returning runner to go under twenty minutes so we'll have to see what their third through fifth runners can do. They may rely on some younger runners coming up from last year's modified. Voorheesville Blackbirds Last year's record: 8-0 Sectional place: 5th place - Class C Top Projected Runners:: Macky Lloyd-Jr.., Ryan Allison-Jr., Kyle Jacobs-Sr., Nathan Bub-So., Dylan Perillo-Sr., Ian Powell-So., Tommy Pasquali-Jr. Outlook: Defending Colonial Council champs only lose their number three runner from last year. They return a young and experienced team and are the big favorites to repeat. Lloyd is a returning state qualifier and one of the top runners in the league. Allison had a disappointing sectionals but should bounce back this year and they also return a top seven who were all under twenty minutes last year at the Queensbury course. Add some runners coming up from a very good modified team and it will be a tough task to knock them off for the league title this year. Colonial Council Girls Last Year's Team Champion: Holy Names Last Year's Individual Champion: Rachel Ohm (Holy Names)
League Outlook Holy Names is the defending Class A state champions and with the top four returning times in the league shouldn't have a problem defending their Colonial Council title. Section 2 Class C Champ, Voorheesville had three runners in front of Lansingburgh's first and that puts them in the lead for second in the league. Schalmont should beat out Cohoes for fourth and Cobleskill-Richmondville and Ravena will be rebuilding. Individually it will be safe to say that it's someone from Holy Names. They have the only four runners in the league to go under 20 minutes. Hardwick and Ohm will be the favorites to take the title.
Cobleskill-Richmondville Bulldogs Last year's record: 2-6 Sectional place: 8th place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Chelsea Rogers-Sr., Cassy Reardon-Sr., Gwen Girdansky-So. Alicia Johnson-Sr. Outlook: Lost their top runner to graduation but return the rest of their top five. Unfortunately they are the only four runners returning. They will need some help from some new runners if they are to improve in the league. All four are underclassmen so it may take a year for this team to develop. Cohoes Tigers Last year's record: 5-3 Sectional place: 4th place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Laryssa Hebert-Jr., Missy Steciuk-Sr., Gilly Pompey-So., Chelsea Ernst-So., Paige Steciuk-So., Emily Designore-Fr., Julia Steciuk-Sr. Outlook: Lost their third and fifth runners to graduation but return everyone else. Hebert is a solid number one and should be in the top ten in the league. Pompey was also running in the 21 minute range and Missy Steciuk is in the 22 minute range. They will need to get the rest of the team to drop their times if they want to move from the middle of the pack. Holy Names Last year's record: 8-0 Sectional place: 1st place - Class A - State Champions Top Projected Runners: Claire Hardwick-Jr., Johanna Ohm-So., Laura Isabelle-Fr.,Alex Falvey-Jr., Grace Loughney-Jr., Victoria Isabelle-Jr., Sammy Giglio-So. Outlook: Defending Class A champs are looking strong again. Lose their top runner but return everyone else and with the only four runners in the league to break twenty minutes they should have no problem taking the league title. They will still want a little more help at the fifth position but may get it from their modified team from last year or from one of their track runners. Will still be one of the top teams in the state but it will be very tough to get past Burnt Hills and Queensbury. Lansingburgh Knights Last year's record: 5-3 Sectional place: 2nd place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Melissa Gordon-Sr., Molly McDonough-Jr., Courtney Ketz-Jr., Amber Thorton-Jr., Kyleigh Higgins-So., Cate Houshower-Fr., Bianca Canty-Fr. Outlook: Last year I said that the needed to improve their depth and they did that in bunches. With four runners packed together in the 21 minute range and two more in the mid 22's they should be able to challenge for second in the league. Also have a good shot for the Class B title but will need to get closer to Broadalbin-Perth's top four runners to challenge them. Mechanicville Red Raiders Last year's record: 0-8 Sectional place: incomplete - Class C Top Projected Runners: Ashley Bruce-Fr., Kathryn Tylock-So. Outlook: Lost their top runners and only return two runners from an incomplete team. Same boat as their boys' team as they need to concentrate on filling their lineup. Ravena Indians Last year's record: 1-7 Sectional place: 9th Place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Megan Caswell-So, Jennifer Gagnon-Sr. Melissa Ciaccia-Sr. Stephanie Lawrence-So., Julianne Maynus-Sr., Christina Zullo-Jr. Outlook: Lost their top runner to graduation and have no returning runners under 24 minutes so they will need to work on improving to move up in a tough league. Caswell and Gannon are the only ones in the 24 minute range but they team is all underclassmen so they have time to improve. Schalmont Sabers Last year's record: 3-5 Sectional place: 5th place - Class B Top Projected Runners: Angie Baggetta-Sr., Megan Halliwell-Jr., Roxanne Hammond-Jr., Ashley Myers-Sr., Andrea Fortman-Do., Courtney Mafrici-Sr. Cara DellaVilla-Sr. Outlook: Very solid top three with Baggetta has one of the top runners in the league and Hammond a possible top ten league runner and Halliwell just over 22 minutes. Will look to improve on their depth as their fifth runner was in the mid 23's and there's a big dropoff after their sixth runner. May be able to move up Calss B's if they can get a good run from Baggetta. Voorheesville Blackbirds Last year's record: 5-3 Sectional place: 1st place - Class C Top Projected Runners: Hillary Edmunds-Jr., Chantal Little-Jr., Allison Vogelien-Jr., Jessica Brown-So., Kali Votraw-So., Zoe Edmunds-Fr., Elizabeth Dawson-Jr. Outlook: Defending Class C champs lose absolutely no one. On top of that, have a team of all underclassmen so they won't be going anywhere for the next few years. Top three is tough with Edmunds, Little, and Vogelien all top ten runners in the league. Would like to see a little more improvement from their fifth and sixth runners as they were both just over 22 minutes last year. Unfortunately, they will have a tough time repeating as Class C champ since Greenwich has moved back up from Class D.
