Boys Pre-Season Sectional Preview |
Note: Most of the individuals consist of returning runners. New runners are tough to plug in though the team scores may have been adjusted based on new runners.
Boys: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D
Saratoga Springs looks to be the favorite for their first sectional title since 2005 with three runners in the top ten led by Brent Freestone. Two times champs, Shaker, lost a ton to graduation but should have enough to hold on to second with Adam Schwenzfeier leading the way. Bethlehem and Colonie should battle it out for third. Colonie has a solid top three but Bethlehem has the depth. Shenendehowa, Niskayuna, and Guilderland are only 15 points apart and will be in the mix for 5th.
Individually, Saratoga's Brent Freestone has the top returning time but the question is where to put Columbia's Kyle Gronostaj after not running last year. Based on his Spring I decided to put him second. If he's healthy then I think he's definitely the favorite. Albany's Philo Germano could also be a factor. He usually starts off the season slow but then comes on at the end when it counts.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons looks to be the favorite for he school's first sectional title since 1983. They return the best top three in the section but needs better help with their back end. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake is not that far behind. Even though they lose their top two from last year, they still have great depth and will not give up their streak of four straight sectional titles easily. Queensbury seems to be stuck in the middle between the top two teams and the rest of teams. Averill Park looks to be four, led by state qualifier Andrew Tario but will need help from their back end. After the first four there are about 9 or 10 teams that could get 5th place. It all depends on who improves the most this year.
Individually, Jason Lange of Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons returns with the best time from last year with his brother, Matt, not far behind. Their teammate, Jordan Pantalone and Averill Park's Andrew Tario could also challenge for the title.

Fonda-Fultonville is the 3 time sectional champion and once again the favorite for the Class C title. Matt Hoffman leads the team but they don't have a lot of depth and that could turn into a problem. Broadalbin-Perth and Schuylerville are a little behind Fonda and should battle it out for second. Broadalbin-Perth comes down from Class B but lost a bunch to graduation. They still have a good core but, like Fonda, have some depth issues. Schuylerville probably has the best depth of the three. They returns state Qualifier Matt Watson and should bring up an excellent modified team this yea. Maple Hill looks to be fourth with four other teams right behind them that are looking to move up.
Individually, Fonda-Fultonville's Matt Hoffman returns with the best time in the Class. Schuylerville's Matt Watson was only about five seconds behind Hoffman last year and could challenge. Chatham's Ross Wightman could be a dark horse based on his Spring but we'll see how that translates to cross country.

Could this be Berlin's year to finally win a Class D title? They've been runner-up the last four years and look to be the slight favorite coming in. They don't have that one big front runner but have a very small compression between their first through fifth runners. Greenwich and Mekeel Christian are also looking to take over the Class D crown. Greenwich comes down from Class D and is led by Jeremy Spezio. Mekeel Christian has the best top 3 in Section 2 Class D but need big help from their back end if they want to win.
Individually, it looks like a three runner race between Greenwich's Jeremy Spezio Jake Urys of Mekeel Christian, and Tom McClellan of Mayfied. I give the slight edge to Spezio based on his returning time. Eventhough was slightly ahead of McClellan and Urys . Urys and McClellan had excellent Springs and will definitely be in the mix against Spezio.
